Healthy enamel — the surface that coats and protects your tooth –is what the world sees first when you smile, and the key ingredient to a successful appearance. But Lisa had many dental issues to deal with before she could smile with confidence: she suffered from enamel dysplasia, which had caused her enamel to become thin, fragile, and to stain easily; over time it had eroded and chipped away. She also had a severe bite collapse — her upper front teeth completely covered her lower front teeth when biting. Finally, she had an uneven gum line that displayed a gummy smile. Our advanced imaging technology helped us solve all the problems. First, we tracked her jaw movements in three dimensions, recording the activity of her craniofacial muscles. Then, we determined what her corrected jaw position should be, which allowed us to create beautiful dentistry that would work with her own physiology for optimum results. Our plan for Lisa was to begin by correcting her gumline imbalance. Once that was done, we prepared her teeth for custom-made temporary caps at the new jaw position. We observed and monitored the changes for the next two months and finetuned the bite relationship. When we were satisfied with this new position, we replaced the provisional caps with the definitive porcelain restoration. With good timing, Lisa received the porcelain caps a few days before her birthday and told us it was the best gift she’d ever received.
