Do Dental Implants Hurt?

October 17, 2017

The placement of dental implants at our Manhattan office is virtually painless. Thanks to advancements in both implant technology and topical anesthetics, we are able to place dental implants without heavy sedation and, while some mild discomfort may linger for a day or two following implant placement, over-the-counter medications are typically enough to address the problem until it subsides on its own.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of having dental implants placed, we would be happy to discuss your sedation dentistry options. We offer both nitrous oxide and conscious oral sedation to help combat anxiety and fear before and during your procedure. During your dental implants consultation with Dr. Ramin Tabib or Dr. Elisa Mello, we can discuss these options as needed to help ensure your absolute comfort while you are in our care.

What is the Dental Implant Process?

At NYC Smile Design, the placement of dental implants is completed in five phases. These are:

  1. The Planning Phase
  2. Placement of the Implant
  3. Osseointegration/Healing
  4. Abutment Placement
  5. Final Restoration

If your missing tooth is in a highly visible area, a temporary restoration will be placed during the healing process. This temporary restoration will serve to restore a more appealing look to the smile during the few short weeks it takes for your implant to integrate into your jawbone.

We have chosen to offer Straumann dental implants for several reasons, not the least of which is their ability to integrate quickly into the jaw. Where some implants can take up to six months to heal, Straumann implants are typically ready for complete restoration within the first month of their placement.

How You Can Help Prevent Discomfort

Discomfort with dental implants is most often caused by implant failure. The most common cause of implant failure is infection. The most common cause of infection is inconsistent or inadequate care during the healing phase.

We have enjoyed tremendous success with dental implants at our New York City office, but the success of your implants will depend – at least in part – on the care you take of them during the healing phase. We will provide you with detailed instructions on implant care to help ensure their longevity. Taking time to carefully follow our instructions will help your dental implants last a lifetime.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be the ideal dental implants candidate. Traditional dental implants require a specific amount of bone be present in the jaw to properly secure, but we have options available for patients with varying jaw density, width, and depth. During your initial consultation with Dr. Mello or Dr. Tabib, we will determine if sufficient bone is present for implant placement. If you are not a good implant candidate, we will cover all available alternatives during this appointment.

We offer dental bridges and advanced, life-like dentures in addition to dental implants. We can cover all of these options with you during your consultation to help you determine which solution will meet your needs and produce the best results.
