Dental Implants and Osseointegration

April 24, 2017

Dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime. Once they have been inserted, implants act as a replacement for the missing roots of teeth, allowing them to preserve jaw structure while serving as a reliable foundation for dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to learn more about the benefits of dental implants, call our NYC implant dentists at 212-452-3344 to schedule your initial consultation right away.

Osseointegration

Are you missing one or more teeth? Call experienced and trusted NYC implant dentists Dr. Mello & Dr. Tabib at 212-452-3344 to schedule a consultation today!Osseointegration is the process by which your dental implants will become a permanent part of your smile. During the process of osseointegration, osteoblasts and connective tissue attach to microscopic holes on the surface of the implant, securing it directly into bone. This allows the dental implant to be secured without intervening soft tissue, eliminating the risk of it coming loose or falling out.

An implant is successfully osseointegrated once it is secured firmly enough into the jawbone to prevent its moving. It is at this point that our experienced New York City implant dentists can place your porcelain dental crown and restore complete strength and beauty to your smile.

The process of osseointegration can take up to six months, but initial healing will allow temporary restorations to be placed in as few as one to two weeks. However, each patient heals differently. During the planning phase of your dental implant procedure, we will discuss recovery and provide a timeline to help you plan accordingly for the restoration of your smile.

Preventing Implant Failure

Once a dental implant has osseointegrated, risks of it coming loose or falling out are greatly reduced. These risks continue to be low so long as proper care is taken of the teeth. Dental implants and their restorations should be treated like natural teeth: brushed after every meal, flossed, twice daily, and checked every six months by our New York City dentists during routine cleanings and examinations. These steps will help ensure the bone and tissue supporting your restorations remain healthy and strong.

Some implants will fail before they are integrated into the jawbone. This can occur when underlying disease or insufficient bone structure are present. We will carefully examine your teeth and gums prior to placing your dental implant to ensure no underlying complications are present. If you are not currently a good candidate for dental implants we can provide preliminary services designed to improve your chances of implant success. During your consultation, we will discuss preparation in more detail to help make sure you are provided the most effective and long-lasting treatment available.
