Can you use your FSA or HSA for cosmetic dentistry? Most likely not. These plans are designed to cover the cost of medical and dental expenses not fully covered by insurance. They seldom include procedures that would be considered aesthetic-only. However, it is possible to use your flexible or healthcare spending account for restorative services with functional benefit.
While your FSA or HSA cannot be used for tooth whitening, you may be able to use your plan to pay for costs related to:
- Dental implants – the strongest and most reliable way to replace missing teeth
- Porcelain dental crowns – indistinguishable from natural teeth, porcelain crowns protect and strengthen teeth impacted by decay and trauma
- White fillings and porcelain inlays/onlays – tooth-colored and bonded to the teeth, these treatments seal cavities and help prevent infection
- Invisalign® and ceramic braces – these aesthetically pleasing orthodontic solutions can be assisted by AcceleDent®, which may also be covered by your FSA or HSA
Your flex plan will most likely cover the cost of dental bonding for the closing of small gaps and the protection of enamel and, in some circumstances, porcelain veneers may be covered if they are being used for functional restoration. It is, however, always a good idea to talk with your plan administrator before committing to a service to make sure it will be covered.
