Which Type of Sedation is Right for Me?January 15, 2021
At NYC Smile Design, we are pleased to offer the option of gentle sedation to patients who are nervous or who have difficulties with dental care due to:
- A heightened gag reflex
- Difficulties getting numb
- Sensitive teeth
- And more
If you have traditionally struggled with dental visits due to emotional or physical discomfort, we welcome the opportunity to meet with you, listen to your concerns, and help you choose the most effective sedation dentistry option for your needs.
Our Sedation Dentistry Options
We offer two of the safest, most trusted, and most effective sedation options available:
- Nitrous Oxide
- Conscious Oral Sedation
Both of these options are known for their safety and efficacy and both can be of tremendous benefit to people who require dental sedation. Neither one, however, is ideal for every need.
Nitrous oxide produces a light level of sedation. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide has potent analgesic properties as well, allowing it to serve the double purpose of temporary sedation and pain relief.
Administered through a mask or tubes, once the supply is cut, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, making it ideal for people on the go.
Conscious oral sedation, also known simply as oral sedation, produces a moderate to heavy level of sedation. While you will still be conscious, the relaxing effects of oral sedation allow for complete comfort.
This option produces a lasting calm. It may be best to arrange for a ride home if you are being orally sedated.
IV sedation, also known as twilight sedation, is commonly used for oral surgery. This type of sedation should only be administered by an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthesiologist who can also monitor patient vitals throughout.
We do not offer IV Sedation at NYC Smile Design.
