A recent study from the ADA found that 28% of young adult respondents and 29% of lower-income adult respondents believe that the appearance of their smiles has negatively impacted their ability to get a job. And they are, in all likelihood, correct.
Your smile is one of your most noticeable features. In fact, surveys from the AGD have found that 40% of people notice smiles first and 96% of people believe an attractive smile is important. Your smile also speaks, without words, to your perceived honesty, work-ethic, and cleanliness, all of which prospective employers are looking for. If you are among the 25% of adults who are afraid to smile because of the appearance of your teeth, the message you are sending may not be the one you want to impart during a job interview.
According to the ADA study, some hiring managers report viewing prospective employees who refuse to smile as cold, indifferent, or unfriendly. Others report passing up otherwise qualified candidates based solely on their smiles, out of fear that an unbecoming smile may turn potential customers or clients off and result in lost sales. Many hiring managers reported that a broken, dingy, or otherwise unattractive smile seems undisciplined and careless, allowing it to factor negatively in this regard as well.
Are these judgments fair? Probably not. Are they Accurate? Not always. Are they real? Yes. So unfair or not, they have to be accounted for.
