Is There Room for Improvement in Your Oral Hygiene Routine?

September 3, 2018

Oral health is not separate from systemic health. Conditions impacting the health of teeth and gums have a direct relationship with symptoms and medical complications throughout the body. Gum disease, for example, may result in oral health issues like tooth loss or jawbone necrosis, but when bacteria from gum disease enters the bloodstream, health risks include:

Pregnant women with gum disease are at increased risk for premature birth, low birth-weight, and other pregnancy and labor complications as well.

The most effective way to prevent the development of tooth infection, cavities, and gum disease is through a solid oral hygiene routine – and that routine starts in your own home.

Self Improvement Month

NYC Dentist | Manhattan Cosmetic DentistSeptember is National Self-Improvement Month. What better way to begin improving your self than committing to maintaining healthy teeth and gums? Not only will this help ensure a bright, attractive smile, it will help prevent issues that can lead to serious oral and systemic health concerns, and may even improve your current quality of life – all with very little effort on your part.

Taking care of your teeth and gums is easy. All you need to do is brush, floss, and visit the dentist.

When you brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a quality toothpaste, such as Remin Pro®, which is available through our office. Try to avoid toothpaste with abrasive ingredients that can damage enamel and destroy restorations. Be sure to brush for at least two minutes with a manual brush or one minute with an electric each time.

Flossing should be done in between each tooth at least twice a day. Following each tooth from root to crown with a clean section of floss will remove food particles, debris, and plaque to help prevent gum infection and tooth decay.

Visits to our office should take place every six months. These visits allow us to clean and polish your teeth while removing tartar and plaque that may be difficult to reach at home. They also allow us to ensure there are no early signs of oral health problems and to provide swift treatment when issues arise. Treated promptly, most oral health issues can be addressed with very little intervention.

You can assist your oral health efforts by choosing foods and drinks that support optimal health. Try to avoid foods and beverages with sugar and artificial colors. Select foods that are fresh and whole with a focus on fruits and vegetables. Try to avoid boxed foods, frozen entrees, and other processed options, and be sure to drink a lot of water. These steps will all help minimize the damage your teeth and gums are subjected to and work to help you maintain peak oral and systemic health.
