Ground Breaking News: Costa Mesa, California has recently become the first city in the United States to call for an immediate end to dental amalgam.

What is Dental Amalgam?

Dental amalgam is a filling material that is 50% mercury. As indicated in some of our previous blogs, dental Amalgam plays a very devastating role on your health. Mercury is the most dangerous neurotoxin that exists and it does not belong anywhere in the human body.  There are dentists that even use dental amalgam to repair failing root canals by surgically plugging this material at the end of the root which means now the mercury is completely embedded in the body and in direct communication with the bone and blood.

What does the Costa Mesa Resolution mean for you?

The resolution, sponsored by Councilman Gary Monahan, received a lot of support from the public.  Citizens from different walks of life descended on the City Council meeting to testify in favor of this resolution. As a result of the courageous efforts of these testimonies, the resolution passed unanimously and history was made in the city of Costa Mesa.

The resolution calls on federal and state agencies to eliminate amalgam, and asks dentists in Costa Mesa to switch to non-toxic alternatives.  This means that eventually, in the hopeful future, this dangerous product will be banned altogether and be replaced by products that are biocompatible and won’t have potential side effects to your health.  Although this resolution does not actually ban silver amalgam fillings, it is an important step toward ending the use of this dangerous dental filling material.

WellSphere reports:

“The watershed Monahan Resolution is the first success for Californians for Green Dentistry, a new project of Consumers for Dental Choice … At the city council hearing … dentists, health professionals, injured consumers, scientists, advocates, and even former Californian Dental Board member Dr. Chet Yokoyama… offered poignant testimony calling for a ban on dental mercury.”

For its national and international impact, the timing of the Monahan resolution could not be better. In December, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be holding hearings to reconsider its position on amalgam.  This is important news especially since the FDA has always been a protector of mercury fillings. However, with the mounting pressure from International organizations, the public and scientists, the tide is turning and the administration is reconsidering its position.  Internationally, the United Nations will begin its second session in January, to examine a treaty addressing all sources of mercury. There is also a new coalition called the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, led by Charlie Brown (charlie@toxicteeth.org),  leading the charge to phase out amalgam everywhere.

Below is a video that clearly demonstrates the dangerous gases that are emitted from mercury amalgam
