Be Good to Your Mouth, and Your Mouth Will Be Good to You

December 22, 2010

You might not be aware of it, but some of your habits might be harming the general health of your mouth. It is important to be nice to your mouth because not only does it play an important role for your speech, but it is the gateway to how well your body digests the food you eat. The same saliva in your mouth that helps in breaking down of food helps protect and repair your teeth from the constant assault of bacteria. Therefore, it is important to have a constant flow of saliva in your mouth. This is why you need to be aware, and consciously note, habits that prevent enough saliva flow, or medications that you take, like Antidepressants and Blood pressure medication that prevent saliva flow.  The lack of saliva flow breeds bacteria, resulting in more tooth decay

Medications are not solely to be blamed for possible teeth damage as other factors like Common products such as soft drinks, herbal teas, sports drinks and aspirin wear down the enamel on your teeth leaving them brittle and more sensitive to pain. More and more, you will find that products in the United States are being made that contains dangerous acids which erode our teeth and increase the likelihood of decay.

Most toxic of all is smoking and tobacco products. These products affect the attachment of bone and soft tissue inducing gum disease making smokers more susceptible to infections like periodontal disease. These products have toxins that cause tooth discoloration, loss of bone within the jaw, increased levels of oral cancer and delayed healing after dental treatments.

You are encouraged to stay away from the mentioned products. It is best if your mouth is happy, for a happy mouth reports of a happy and healthy you.
