Understanding the Trigeminal Nerve

May 5, 2016

The trigeminal nerve (CN V) is responsible for nearly all of the sensation felt throughout the face. When pressure is placed on the trigeminal nerve, TMJ symptoms such as chronic headaches and generalized facial pain may be unavoidable. In these cases, relieving pressure through targeted TMJ treatment is one of the most effective ways to eliminate pain and produce lasting comfort.

  • Ophthalmic (V1) – the smallest of the three branches, the ophthalmic nerve supplies sensation to the upper eyelids, eyebrows, forehead, and scalp
  • Maxillary (V2) – the second largest of the three branches, the maxillary nerve supplies sensation to lower eyelids, the cheeks and midface, sinuses, nasal cavity, and palate
  • Mandibular (V3) – the largest branch of the trigeminal nerve, the mandibular nerve is responsible for sensation in and around the jaw along with control of the muscles of mastication

When the jaw is misaligned, pressure is placed on the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve. This, in turn, can limit muscle function around the jaw and result in pain sensations throughout the two smaller branches. As a consequence, TMJ symptoms may not seem to be related to the jaw at all, but without addressing this underlying cause, lasting relief is not likely to be found.

The New York City neuromuscular dentists at NYC Smile Design have both specific training and years of experience detecting even the slightest jaw misalignment, and offer progressive and inventive treatment options that address the underlying cause of discomfort to produce results that last.
