What are braces?

Braces are an orthodontic treatment consisting of brackets and wires. The brackets, attached to the surface of the teeth, are strung through with archwire that is gradually tightened to pull the teeth into their optimal position.

What are ceramic braces?

Ceramic braces are braces that are made with ceramics instead of metal.

Are ceramic braces and clear braces the same thing?

Ceramic braces can be shaded to match the exact color of your teeth, making them invisible from a distance. They are sometimes called “clear braces,” though this designation may also apply to ClearCorrect, Invisalign® and removable options that are actually see-through.

Are ceramic braces as fast as metal braces?

Ceramic braces are just as fast as metal braces and may be faster than removable options for some patients. The best way to learn how long your orthodontic treatment will take is through a one-on-one consultation.

At NYC Smile Design, we offer AcceleDent® to speed orthodontic treatment. This can, in some cases, reduce treatment time by as much as 50%. During your initial consultation, we can help you determine if this is a good fit for your needs.

Do ceramic braces hurt?

As with all braces, there may be some discomfort when ceramic braces are placed and each time they are adjusted. Discomfort is unavoidable with orthodontic treatment, but it is not unmanageable. We will work directly with you to make sure you are as comfortable as possible during these brief and temporary periods.

How often do ceramic braces need to be adjusted?

New wires and technology allow there to be more space in between office visits than ever before. Depending on your specific needs, adjustments may take place every four to eight weeks.

Are ceramic braces hard to take care of?

Brushing your teeth after every meal and snack and flossing twice daily are the best ways to take care of your teeth with or without braces. With braces, special tools may be needed to clean in between brackets or to floss appropriately. We will show you how to use these tools to help ensure your teeth remain strong and healthy during your treatment.
