Oral Cancer Screening
NYC Cosmetic Dentists Serving Manhattan and New York, NY
The Oral Cancer Foundation estimates around 48,500 new oral cancer diagnoses will be made in the United States this year. Sadly, only a little more than half of those diagnosed with oral cancer each year survive five years or longer following diagnosis. Those who do survive are typically the ones whose cancer was detected early on, when treatment has the best chance of being successful. This is one of many reasons to maintain routine visits to our Manhattan dental office for professional examinations and thorough screening of oral tissue.
If you are overdue for a professional cleaning and examination, please contact NYC Smile Design online or by calling 212-452-3344 to schedule an appointment today. We welcome patients from New York City and all surrounding areas.
Screening for Oral Cancer
Oral cancer screening takes place during every routine visit. A majority of this screening is done through visual and hands-on methods wherein our New York dentists carefully examine the mouth and throat for any signs of lesions. If detected, we can take biopsies of the suspicious growth or sore to determine if it is cancerous. In cases where the biopsy returns positive, we refer to local specialists, helping ensure the most effective treatment in the shortest time possible.
We do not treat oral cancer at our office, but do work closely with a number of trusted and experienced oncologists who can provide treatments that help guard against the often fatal consequences of mouth and throat cancer.
Helping Prevent Oral Cancer
We can refer you to a specialist in cases where oral cancer is detected, but taking steps to prevent this life-stealing disease is always best. You can greatly reduce your risks of developing oral cancer by:
- Not smoking or using other tobacco products
- Refraining from excessive alcohol consumption
You can also help prevent your risks by eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet. Along with oral cancer screening, we offer diet evaluation and counseling as part of our comprehensive preventive dentistry services. If you have questions about your diet or how to modify it for optimal oral and systemic health, we can address them in detail during your next visit to our office.
If you are experiencing symptoms of oral cancer including a white or red patch on the inside of the mouth, an oral lesion that does not heal, or a chronic sore throat, please call 212-452-3344 to schedule your oral cancer screening right away. Our New York City dentists will work quickly to determine if oral cancer is present and refer you to the appropriate specialist as needed.
