If you are considering straightening your teeth, you may be wondering about the difference between traditional bracket braces and clear Invisalign. You may be asking yourself, am I a candidate for clear Invisalign, the alternative to braces?

Teeth that are not aligned properly in your mouth create what dentists call “malocclusion”.  Left untreated, malocclusion can lead to periodontal disease and create abnormal amounts of stress on teeth and jaws, which lead to premature wear.  Invisalign is a virtually invisible solution, so you can smile confidently both during treatment and after. Did you know that smiles not only make you feel good, but they're also good for you? Here are some of the reasons: When someone smiles, their face just lights up. When you are looking for less invasive procedures to enhance your smile, you have several options. One of these options is tooth lengthening by gum lift which is common if a particular tooth or teeth are shorter than they should be. You've heard it all before--brush, floss, get your teeth professionally cleaned. Those are the essentials for maintaining your oral health. You need to make them routine to avoid tooth decay, or cavities serious enough to eventually require the extraction of a tooth, or even teeth.

Alas, the tooth fairy rules only when you're still losing your baby teeth. After that, for a grownup, the loss of a tooth by extraction can be a rather traumatic experience. But that experience could be made easier if you understood why you'd need your tooth extracted in the first place. Extraction is basically the removal of a tooth from its bone socket...

Our patients often ask us for advice on how to whiten their teeth. The question often arises as to which option is best:

1.      Over the counter bleaching products

2.      Custom trays made in the dental office with Dentist diagnosed bleaching agent

3.      In-office power bleaching

At NYC Smile Design, we have had great success with in-office bleaching in combination with the second option as maintenance. This can be completed in one session of between one and two hours, and produces immediate results. The most basic and important step in maintaining your oral health is choosing the right toothpaste. Recent studies confirm that over-the-counter toothpastes aren’t effective enough in preventing tooth decay and gum disease. In previous blogs, we have highlighted the dangers of commercial toothpastes. These standard toothpastes contain an outdated decay-fighting ingredient: Fluoride. This ingredient is toxic if swallowed, causes staining of the teeth...

Have you ever asked yourself why you're often told that yogurt is good for you? Let’s be honest: yogurt is essentially fermented milk. However, it contains probiotics, which play an important role in your body’s essential functions. It may come as a surprise to you, but your body has bacteria that outnumber your human cells by a factor of 10 to 1!  That's a lot of living organisms in your body! Like many other organisms, they can be good, or bad. While the common perception of bacteria is that they are harmful, the “good" bacteria in your body actually play important roles in your health, particularly those involved with metabolism and...
