We've been long-time supporters of dental hygiene for all our patients --learning good habits and practicing them until they become a way of life. You know the drill: Have checkups twice a year (an ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of cure); eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts and low in saturated animal fat. And learn to love life without sugar. This is a great way to stay healthy in body and mouth.
But there's more: floss at least twice a day, brush after meals, and use your mouthwash daily. This should go a long way to keeping your mouth and your teeth clean. If you use the right stuff. That, as it turns out, is a big "if."
A recent New York Times article confirmed what we've understood for years. That most toothpastes and mouthwash products do more harm than good. They are born killers; while they may kill harmful bacteria effectively, they are not discriminating and often also kill helpful organisms (the ones useful for digestion) at the same time. The real problem is what they use to kill: Triclosan.
Triclosan has been an ingredient in hospital scrubs and anti-bacterial hand and body soaps for decades. And, for decades, the Federal Drug Administration has been concerned with the potential consequences of its long-term use. Studies on animals have shown that Triclosan can affect thyroid and sex-hormone levels, and can cause bacteria to become drug-resistant. While several lawsuits have challenged Triclosan's safety, the FDA has not yet issued final opinions.
But think of it this way: because there are serious considerations about routinely using products that rely on Triclosan, is it a substance you want to use daily to clean your body? Or, worse, to put directly in your mouth with your toothpaste and your mouthwash?
Because many health professionals and concerned manufacturers have an interest in finding a safer alternative, we have developed Rejuva™ Smile, a probiotic toothpaste that promotes a healthy dental and oral environment by combating harmful strains of oral bacteria that causes tooth decay and cavities. Rejuva ™ Smile is a new cavity fighting technology that offers a more effective, safe, natural alternative to conventional commercial toothpaste. Rejuva Smile is a family toothpaste. Because it contains no fluoride or Triclosan, it is safer for you and your children to use.
Using this product will certainly help you maintain a high level of oral health without compromising your body's health in the process.
